Holiday-Themed Hikes in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve

Scottsdale has one of the largest urban preserves in the country. It is home to stunning geography, lush cacti forests and diverse wildlife. It features award-winning trails and facilities. And one of the best ways to experience is through guide hikes offeren by the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. This holiday season, the Conservancy is offering two holiday themed hikes:

Thanksgiving: More Pie Please
You won’t feel a bit guilty about having that extra piece of pie after Thanksgiving dinner. Mild inclines only. Allow 1 hour. Please arrive at the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead by 7:45 am. Appropriate for ages 5 and older.

Christmas: Mistletoe and Holly Hike
Enjoy flora and fauna facts with a fanciful connection to holiday festivities on this 4-mile hike on the Marcus Landslide Trail.

Allow 2.5 hours. Please arrive at the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead by 7:45 am. Appropriate for ages 10 and older

Christmas: Silver Bells at Bell Pass
A challenging 9-mile hike to a scenic saddle along the spine of the McDowells, offering interior-mountain views with an elevation gain of 1,350 feet.

Allow 4.5 hours. Please arrive at the Gateway Trailhead by 7:45 am. Appropriate for hardy hikers.

Christmas: Christmas Day Hike
Celebrate the holiday in nature on this scenic 4.5-mile hike around Gateway Loop with an elevation gain of about 700 feet and moderate inclines.

Allow 3 hours. Please arrive at the Gateway Trailhead by 7:45 am. Appropriate for ages 10 and older.

Holiday Hike: New Year’s Eve Day Hike to Sunrise Peak
End the year on this awe-inspiring hike on the west side of Sunrise peak.

A 6-mile hike with some steep sections and an elevation gain of about 900 feet, the hike features long-range, 360-degree views of the valley from the peak. Allow 3 hours. Please arrive at Lost Dog Wash Trailhead by 7:45 am. For hardy hikers.
