How to Spa Like a Pro

A visit to one of Scottsdale’s renowned resort or day spas is the ideal way to relax and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul. If you’re new to the spa scene, here are some tips that will help you spa like a pro.
Reservations
For the best selection of treatments and appointment times, book your services well in advance (one to two weeks ahead is ideal). The spa will request a valid credit card number at the time of booking to hold your appointment. If you have a preference for a male or female spa therapist, be sure to mention that when you make your reservation.
Check-In
Plan to arrive 45 minutes before your appointment. This will give you time to check in, explore the spa facilities and relax for a few minutes before your treatment begins. Most spas recommend that you shower and enjoy the steam, sauna or whirlpool before your treatment. Please note that out of consideration for all spa guests, treatments always begin and end on time. If you arrive late, you’ll lose out on precious treatment time – and trust us, you won’t want to miss a moment!
Spa Attire
You’ll receive a robe and spa sandals to wear during your visit, and a secure locker will be provided for your clothing and personal belongings. Be sure to bring a swimsuit if you’d like to enjoy the pool or whirlpool. It is best not to bring jewelry or other valuables to the spa. If it makes you more comfortable, you may wear undergarments during your treatment; however, please know that spa therapists are highly trained to drape you discreetly and protect your privacy at all times.
Spa Environment
Spas are quiet, tranquil places. Please refrain from using cell phones and pagers, talking loudly and smoking. Some spas are adult-only environments, while others offer services designed specifically for younger guests. If you have children or teens interested in spa or salon services, inquire about the spa’s minimum age requirements at the time you make your appointment. Before and after your treatment, be sure to enjoy the full range of spa amenities, which vary based on location, but often include a pool, sauna, steam room, fitness equipment and classes, and spa café.
Gratuities
Most spas will add a modifiable 18-20% gratuity and have you sign your credit card slip at the time of check-in. If your spa does this, you may leave the spa at any time without checking out unless you wish to change the amount of your gratuity. It’s best to confirm the spa’s individual policy regarding gratuities when you arrive.
Cancellations
Most spas require you to cancel your appointment 24 hours in advance in order to avoid a cancellation fee. Confirm your spa’s individual cancellation policy when your book your treatment.
Health Conditions
If you are pregnant or have any health concerns, disabilities or injuries, please inform the reservation agent when you book your service. This will assist your therapist in customizing your spa experience to your needs.
Personal Preferences
Before your treatment begins, take a moment to let your therapist know if you have certain areas that need more attention than others, or if you have any questions or concerns. During your treatment, let the therapist know if the pressure they are using is too hard or too soft for your liking, or if environmental conditions, such as the room temperature, music level, etc., need to be adjusted for your comfort. Some guests prefer to talk during a treatment, while others desire a quiet experience. Be sure to let your therapist know your personal preferences to make the most of your spa experience.
Now that you’re ready to spa like a pro, here’s the most important tip of all – sit back, relax and prepare to be pampered from head to toe!
