Details
Every January through April the outdoor amphitheater at the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall, just north of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, comes alive with Native American music, dance, art and traditional food. On January 21, 2010, Native Trails, presented by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation and produced by the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, debuted its eighth season of free noontime festivals dedicated to exploring the rich and varied cultures of Native America. We invite you to come along on this sensory journey to the First Nations of Arizona and North America. Musical performances using traditional instruments such as flutes, gourds and drums will delight your ears. A variety of colorful dances ranging from inter-tribal pow wow dances to the excitement and energy of the hoop dance will amaze your eyes. And the rhythmic drumbeat in your chest as you join the performers for a traditional round dance will energize your spirit. Meet the Cast of Native Trails The performers of Native Trails represent a variety of First Nations from across North America. In addition to Derrick Suwaima Davis (Hopi/Choctaw), the artistic director of Native Trails, this year’s cast includes: Tony Duncan (San Carlos Apache, Arikara/Hidatsa/Mandan), Violet Duncan (Northern Cree), Toby Jose (Akimel Au-Authm), Perry Thompson (Diné), Sonya Flores (Cupeño), and Hugh Dawahoya (Hopi). And, in an exciting addition this year, Native Trails also features gifted musician and Taiko drummer Ken Koshio of Japan. Tribal Royalty In recent years, Native American communities have formed pageant committees to select cultural ambassadors to represent their individual Nations. These ambassadors hold titles of royalty, such as Queen, Princess or Miss (as in Miss Hopi, for example). Royalty from the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation will be in attendance at Native Trails on Feb. 27, March 27, April 3 and April 10. Arts & Crafts Native American artisans, jewelry makers and tribal elders from around the state will showcase and sell their work throughout the season. Delicious Fry Bread also will be available for sale at every performance, so come enjoy lunch and Native Trails! |
