Take a musical journey through Hawaii and explore the rich culture of the island state.
All activities happen on Saturday and Sunday unless noted otherwise.
- Craft: ‘Ulī‘ulī
- 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
- Make your own ‘ulī‘ulī rattle used in Hawaiian hula dancing. Shake, rattle, and strike the instrument against your body as you create your very own dance movement.
- Instrument Spotlight: ‘Ulī‘ulī, Pū‘īli, and Ipu Heke

- Play and learn about a variety of traditional Hawaiian musical instruments.

- Enjoy traditional Hawaiian mele (songs) with award-winning slack-key guitarist and ukulele player Moon Kahele.
- Presentation: Hawaiian Musical Instruments
- 12:15–1:00 p.m., Saturday
- Join Hawaiian-culture expert Dr. Bruce Ka‘imiloa Chrisman, MD, for an engaging presentation on the unique construction of Hawaiian musical instruments and artifacts.
- Curator Talk: From the Islands to the Mainland and Beyond
- 12:15–1:00 p.m., Sunday
- Musical traditions originating in Hawaii have been hugely consequential across the United States and around the world. MIM curator Rich Walter will discuss the lasting impact of Hawaiian music as heard by generations of audiences.
- Interactive Performance: Hālau Kūliaikapono
- 1:15–2:00 p.m., Saturday
- Join Hālau Kūliaikapono for a presentation of traditional and modern hula, honoring Hawaii’s monarchy and the island of Oʻahu.
- Interactive Performance: Desert Strummers and Kikahamālie Kaʻiwalani Hale o Hula
- 1:15–2:00 p.m., Sunday
- Experience the rhythms of Hawaiian hula with local dance group Kikahamālie Kaʻiwalani Hale o Hula and live band the Desert Strummers.
- Workshop: Introduction to Ukulele
- 2:00–3:00 p.m.
- Learn the history of Hawaii’s iconic instrument and explore the fundamentals of the ukulele with local masters from ShakAZ Jamz.
