“Attention to Detail” June 1– 30
For the month of June, Wilde Meyer Gallery will have a group show of beautifully detailed works by some of its favorite artists including Nicholas Wilson, Stephen Morath and Connie R. Townsend.
Nicholas Wilson’s artwork has brought about many exciting opportunities in his life — from Curator of Exhibits at the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in the 70s to a 16,250 square-foot mural he painted in the 80s at the Jungle World Exhibit in the Bronx Zoo, New York. At the age of eight, Mr. Wilson’s pursuit of being an artist developed from his love of nature. Years of drawing, creating, exploring new mediums and perseverance led to this lifetime profession.
Landscape painting, for the most part, tends to be a sober genre. And despite the number of artists that take a graphic approach to the subject, there are only a few that embrace it with a sense of humor. Southwest artist Stephen Morath is one of the more successful of these artists. The paintings of Morath are a blend of bright, expressionistic landscapes with a touch of wry humor and nostalgia. Whether capturing a bountiful table of delights on a Mexican beach or a parade of trailers through the desert countryside, his paintings express the artist’s obvious amusement and fascination with the Southwest. Morath juxtaposes vintage automobiles, trailers and billboards in such a way that they seem a natural addition to the beautifully painted landscape.
Connie R. Townsend says, “Like most people, I have had a life full of joy and sorrow. The part where I started painting, is hands down the most joyous.” She received her art education from Mt. San Antonio College in California during the 1970s. Her whimsical and joy-filled works contain an impressive amount of finesse in oil and acrylic painting technique. Her lively and surprising use of color combine with her exciting design sense to create paintings that are fun to live with.
