5 Spots to Literally Stay Cool at this Summer
The laws of physics will tell you that heat rises and cold air sinks, and that's especially true come summertime in Scottsdale. Allow me to share my favorite underground spots in the city with you, for cool temperatures and even cooler libations.
With a sampling of cold, local craft beers and a subterranean tasting room all to yourself, you'll feel like you've struck it rich at The Goldmine Underground Tap & Barrel found beneath Goldwater Brewing Co. in Old Town Scottsdale. You'll need a reservation for this 50-minute, sit-down experience, but it's worth the phone call to get a private sip session of brews like the Barrel Aged Imperial Desert Rose and the Hivernation Honey Lager.
You'd likely not expect to find a tropical tiki establishment in the middle of the desert - much less beneath a coffee shop - but a visit to Sip Coffee and Beer Garage in Arcadia and a stroll downstairs will take you to a hidden cocktail bar, Undertow. Surrounded by lanterns, tiki posts and wood-clad walls, there's every reason to believe you've just boarded a pirate ship while sipping concoctions like the Heart of a Sailor or the Lost Loot.
What do you get when you combine a carefree ambiance, low lighting and live music? Blind Dragon; the perfect place to kick back and cool off with a cocktail while singing some karaoke. The neon lights, colorful cocktails and yes, sing-alongs, beckon after dark at this Old Town Scottsdale hangout. And don't worry, this joint offers six private suites if you're planning a party or are just prone to stage fright.
Billed as Arizona's only underground restaurant and a Valley landmark since 1971, the "beneath sea level" experience at The Salt Cellar is prime for summertime in Scottsdale. Take the antique wooden stairway down three flights to a snug-yet-cool seaside hideaway where cocktails, fine wines and fresh seafood from around the world await.
No visit to Scottsdale would be complete without a little bit of that Wild West feeling. Enjoy a Western saloon experience at Waltz & Weiser Whiskey Bar and Cantina, tucked below The Westin Kierland's main lobby and overlooking the Dreamweavers Canyon patio. The top-shelf tequilas and whiskeys served in a dimly lit, old watering hole setting transport you back to the historic mining years of Arizona. There's a delicious bar and cantina menu, too, for those not only on a liquid diet.
