A Gallery for Every Taste
Famed artist, Edgar Degas once said, “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” As a child growing up in Scottsdale, I remember standing in front of sculptures in the streets of Old Town and studying paintings during Scottsdale ArtWalk, with my dad asking me, “What do you see?”
My dad also said it was good to get a dose of culture, and that still rings true today in Scottsdale, which offers more than 100 diverse art galleries – many of them in the Old Town Arts District. Follow along to find a gallery – or two, or three – to suit your style.
Set foot inside Bonner David Galleries’ Contemporary Gallery and find yourself surrounded by color and texture that awakens the eyes and opens the mind. This spot is home to one of the most expansive assortments of contemporary paintings, sculptures and mixed media works. Fans of this genre also must visit Gebert Contemporary’s carefully curated abstract paintings and sculptures by an international group of artists, to get a taste of art from faraway places like Belgium and Spain.
As you approach the northwest corner of Scottsdale Road and Main Street, you can’t miss The Legacy Gallery, a staple in Old Town since 1988. The gallery represents more than 100 nationally known artists, spanning a wide variety of mediums and subject matter, including Western, wildlife, still-life and landscape. Western art buffs would be remiss to pass up the seemingly-never-ending collection. Next on the list is Altamira Fine Art, specializing in Western contemporary artwork by leading artists redefining life in the West. Works range from oil painting, acrylic and bronze, to digital art installations and found object mixed media. Be sure to ask about their almost-weekly artist receptions while you’re there!
Contrary to popular belief, cool photo galleries do exist outside of New York and Los Angeles. Tilt Gallery is a case in point, where you’ll find incredible photographic works by established and emerging photographers using historic and alternative processes right here in Old Town. If you want to be fascinated, keep an eye out for Ernie Button’s pieces based on the residue he observed his Scotch leaving in the bottom of his glass. Next, check out Nature Exposed Photography, where photog Tony Freeman showcases his travels throughout the Southwest to reveal the beauty of Mother Nature in wildlife and landscape.
