Indulge with a Tequila Spa Treatment
Nothing says Southwest like a good tequila. Having lived in Arizona for almost 25 years, I love a good tequila. I’m also quite fond of all the amazing spas we have right here in Scottsdale. So, when I heard the words “healing benefits of tequila,” I perked up.
The Blue Agave plant is almost sacred here in the desert for the tequilas produced from the plant’s piña—the pineapple-shaped heart of this spiny succulent. It’s only appropriate that Agave, the Arizona Spa at the Westin Kierland Resort uses its namesake in signature treatments. But this isn’t just any tequila. The spa uses the resort’s hand-selected Casa Herradura Double Barrel Reposado Tequila from Jalisco, Mexico in combination with lime and salt to soothe the skin and body. Sort of like a margarita for the skin.
My introduction to the Salted Lime and Tequila was with a mini manicure. As the technician massaged my hands and arms with a lotion that smelled good enough to eat, I knew I needed to go for the full treatment. I found my 50-minute Tequila Lime Revive Massage to be both relaxing and invigorating. The perfect combination for a massage.
My therapist let me smell all the ingredients before the treatment started, then she mixed the salted tequila lime with essential oils and I felt myself drift away. The healing properties of agave increase circulation and help sooth muscles. I had hurt my neck a couple of days earlier and my therapist worked on unkinking those knots. My entire body and mind felt relaxed even as my skin tingled with the tequila, lime and salt.
In addition to the massage I enjoyed, Agave offers a variety of treatments using the salted lime and tequila. The Salted Lime and Tequila Body Glow features a custom-blended aromatherapy and desert salt mix as an exfoliant. That is followed by a refreshing rinse under the Vichy shower.
The Tequila Lime Refresher Facial starts with a citrusy cleansing, a tequila toner and an AHA Fruit Pulp and Pineapple Peel. After the peel, the technician applies a masque and ends with a moisturizer. This is the perfect way to get a taste of the Southwest while preparing your face for the desert climate.
Agave has also added the Salted Lime and Tequila to its manicure and pedicure offerings. The treatment starts with a refreshing tequila mist, followed by a salt exfoliation and a hand or foot massage with the subtly fragrant lotions. As with every mani-pedi, you end with nail therapy and polish. Now that is desert-themed pampering at its best.
Agave, the Arizona Spa, is a relaxing space where you can spend the entire spa day enjoying the facilities. I took time to soak in the whirlpool and relax in the steam room in the women’s locker room. The pool is an adults-only oasis for relaxing away the afternoon. You can also use the fitness center during your day at the spa.
After my spa day, with my neck feeling better and my mind still floating, I headed through the resort’s lobby and down the stairs to the Dreamweaver Patio. Each evening at sunset, a bagpiper plays a haunting melody as the day comes to a close. I love relaxing on the patio, music drifting through the air, with the golf course and McDowell Mountains as a breathtaking backdrop. I will never tire of this view. Keeping with the tequila theme of the day, I ordered up the Wild Chili Margarita with fresh agave nectar and just a pinch of tepin chili pepper dust for a real Southwest kick. Such a perfect end to a day in one of Scottsdale’s best spas.
