There’s no shortage of ways to explore the magical Sonoran Desert, but going horseback riding in Scottsdale is arguably one of the most unique. Horses go where vehicles—and sometimes even feet—cannot, giving you access to little-explored scenery and allowing you to very literally cover a lot of ground in a short time.
With a variety of ranches and outfitters offering one-of-a-kind rides and experiences, you'll find the perfect adventure for every age, interest and experience level. Giddy up!
MacDonald's Ranch
A family-owned business celebrating nearly 70 years in Scottsdale, MacDonald’s Ranch offers a bit of everything when it comes to horseback riding. Year-round, choose from private or group rides, one or two hours long, with a more limited schedule during the summer season (May 1 through September 30). MacDonald’s Ranch is an especially great option for beginners to get a taste of horseback riding in Scottsdale, as riders can be as young as six.
One of the standout options is the Moonlight Ride, which heads out as the sun sets and lets you experience the desert in a whole new light (literally!). Moonlight rides are offered just a few days each month, leading up to the full moon.
MacDonald’s Ranch has other kid-friendly, authentic Wild West experiences, too, including cowboy cookouts and stagecoach rides.
Windwalker Expeditions
For those who specifically want to enjoy horseback riding in Scottsdale as a private experience, look no further than Windwalker Expeditions. Based out of Cave Creek, Windwalker only runs private rides. The company also uses a ‘mobile’ model, meaning that instead of operating out of a stable, they come to you—horses and all! Imagine being picked up in front of your Scottsdale resort by a truck and trailer hauling horses. Beats any Uber we’ve ever taken!
Every trail ride with Windwalker Expeditions is completely custom, tailored to your interests and experience. Looking for a unique date night? An intimate family experience for your little ones’ first ride? Maybe even a special, totally private place to pop the question? Windwalker checks all those boxes! Because of the bespoke nature of the rides, you must call or email to book.
Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch
In the ranch’s own words, the “real cowboy way” to experience the Old West is on horseback. And what a spectacular setting for it! Perched right on the banks of the Lower Salt River in the Tonto National Forest, it’s difficult to imagine a more picturesque place for horseback riding in Scottsdale.
Riders seven and older can choose from one or 1.5-hour guided trail rides through the rugged Goldfield Mountains, up ridges overlooking Saguaro Lake, and right across the river (unsurprisingly, always a highlight!). Keep your eyes open, because sightings of bald eagles, deer, and even wild horses are quite common.
While you’re here, consider making a day of it, or even an overnight trip. In addition to several other adventurous activities like kayaking and paddleboarding, rafting, mountain biking, hiking, and more, Saguaro Lake Guest Ranch has 20 beautiful historic, rustic cabins ideal for an unplugged night away.
Final note: Due to the extreme heat, most ranches and outfitters offering horseback riding in Scottsdale operate on a limited schedule in the summer. Think early morning or sunset rides only. Some even take the summers off altogether. We highly recommend calling directly to confirm the schedule before booking.
