Solve a Whodunit at SMoCA

The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art’s wildly popular Mystery in the Museum events combine mystery and modern art. Held just a couple of times each year (in the spring and fall or winter (look out for announcements on the museum’s social channels), these immersive evenings turn the museum into a real-life puzzle, where guests work together to crack clues and uncover secrets hidden throughout the galleries. Each event comes with its own theme and storyline, and tickets include two drinks and a swag bag. Think of it as part escape room, part art adventure.

Sip and Stroll at Taliesin West

Taliesin Sunsets & Sips

Perched in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains, Taliesin West served as Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and cherished desert “architectural laboratory.” During Sunsets & Sips, guests explore the grounds at golden hour, drink in hand, as the desert sky transforms into shades of pink and orange. The monthly event, held October through May, features rotating themes like board game nights, wildlife encounters and stargazing picnics. BYO blanket! If you’re a first-time visitor, plan to return for a full daytime tour. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Wright’s most personal and impressive creations.

Experience Indigenous Culture at The Heard

Heard Museum

On First Fridays, the Heard Museum keeps its doors open late for free admission and live performances. As one of the country’s leading centers for the exploration and preservation of Native American art, the Heard’s music lineup is always fresh and diverse, featuring everything from traditional drum circles to reggae and even heavy metal by Indigenous artists. Attendees can browse exhibits, grab a drink or snack at Coffee Cantina, or pop into the Heardlings Family Activity Room for hands-on projects, making this one of the Valley’s best after-dark family activities.

Step Back in Time at S’edav Va’aki Museum

S'edav Va'aki Museum

Formerly known as Pueblo Grande, the S’edav Va’aki Museum preserves a Hohokam archaeological site more than 1,500 years old adjacent to Papago Park. Its Museum After Dark series offers evening lectures and events that deep-dive into important topics like Indigenous history, Arizona’s vital waterways, and environmental challenges in the desert. Families can also join creative craft nights, where hands-on projects like unconventional stained-glass art teach cultural history through play. It’s an excellent way to mix learning and after-hours family fun.

Catch a Concert at the Musical Instrument Museum

MIM_Roche

The Musical Instrument Museum (known affectionately as MIM) is a beloved daytime stop in its own right, but its concert series takes things up an octave. On any given night throughout the year, the 200,000-plus-square-foot space hosts performances from around the globe. Expect everything from classical quartets and folk trios to rock, jazz, and Hawaiian string music. Check the museum’s calendar before your visit for the lineup. Occasionally, MIM also pairs its concerts with special dinners like a five-course Spanish feast with wine pairings or Candlelight Dinner, giving guests a full sensory experience.

Wine, Illusions, and a Little Magic

Museum of Illusions

For something lighthearted and unexpected, check out the Summer Wine Series at the Museum of Illusions Scottsdale. These monthly 21+ evenings combine optical trickery with light bites and tastings from The Wine Collective Scottsdale, plus live DJ sets, clever exhibits, and photo ops galore. Between the mirror mazes, topsy-turvy rooms, and artful illusions, you’ll find it’s impossible not to smile—especially after a glass (or two) of local vino.

Party With Science at the Arizona Science Center

Arizona Science Center

Who said science can’t be social? The Arizona Science Center’s Science With a Twist series transforms the museum into an adults-only playground for evenings full of cocktails, experiments, and engaging exhibits. Past themes have included “Intergalactic After Dark” and “Hot Ghoul Halloween,” with live entertainment, science demos, special featured exhibits open for exploration, and even costumes. It’s strictly 21+, but for grownups craving after-hours family fun of their own, it’s the perfect mix of play and discovery. Tickets include museum admission, activities, and special exhibits; cocktails and food are available for purchase. Many events also have VIP add-ons. For example, Hot Ghoul Halloween offered a post-event screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show.
